quote me on this

March 14, 2014

i try.  i really do.  but as the wrangler of 10 high school sophomores sometimes my efforts are futile.  like today.

every friday in my advisory we host “tgif” or “trivia, games, information fridays,” which basically consists of me quizzing the students while the students grub through my candy stash.  today i thought it would be a special spring break treat to change things up and quiz them on quotes from famous people.  i started the quotes…and they finished the sentence.  things were off to a great start when an especially musically inclined student nabbed the john lennon quote.  here’s my material:

john lennon

when i went to school, they asked me what i wanted to be when i grew up.  i wrote down “happy”.  they told me i didn’t understand the assignment and i told them… they didn’t understand life.

martin luther king jr.

i have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin…but by the content of their character.

albert einstein

a person who never made a mistake never…tried anything new.

mahatma gandhi

first they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you…then you win.

abraham lincoln

better to be silent and be thought a fool…then to speak out and remove all doubt.

maya angelou

do the best you can until you know better…then when you know better, do better.

eleanor roosevelt

great minds discuss ideas.  average minds discuss events…small minds discuss people.

dr. seuss

be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind…don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.

steve jobs

stay hungry…stay foolish.

the john lennon quote was both the first and the last quote they correctly recited.  go figure.  answers to the steve jobs quote included “stay hungry, eat ms. r’s candy” and “stay hungry, invent the iphone.”  not entirely incorrect, but not entirely what i was going for either.  maybe my kids could tell i was exasperated (especially after they couldn’t complete the mlk quote) so they proposed a bonus round:  a jennifer lawrence quote.

so i gave them what they wanted.  a jennifer lawrence quote:

i have the street smarts and survival skills of, like…

a poodle, they exclaimed in unison.

i try.  i really do.
