east vs. west: the opposite of friends

January 4, 2014

if you’re lucky you have one.  the person who challenges you.  the friend who is unfailingly positive.  the confidante who never judges you.  the party girl who is always ready for one more round or a silly dance under a disco ball.  the person you can be yourself with – even when you’re not feeling like yourself.  she sees through all the stuff and breaks through any silence with the perfect words.

yesterday, i was thinking about how different mary and i are.  she’s fireworks and i’m a shower of confetti.  she’s jazz hands and i’m a britney spears choreographed dance routine.  she’s bourbon and i’m champagne.  she’s an 800 meter sprint and i’m a marathon.  mary and i met in college on the cross country team and we ended up sharing captain duties when she was a senior and i was a junior.  i was always a step behind mary {except on hills – she’d walk up them to catch her breath and then take off again at the crest}.  but she always waits up for me.  she moved back to d.c. 18 months ago after getting her m.b.a. and she’s pretty much been my social director and guardian ever since.

having best friends can be hard.  there are definitely moments where i’m frustrated with mary and her seemingly boundless energy.  i’m positive there are times mary gets frustrated with my sometimes brooding, emotional side.  but the great thing about mary is that she gets it. she gets me.  i think that’s true love.

today, mary is packing up her one bedroom apartment in georgetown and moving to the west coast for her next 18 month rotational stint.  she’s georgetown and i’m more u street.  she’s west coast and now i’m holding down the east.  she’s an m.b.a. and i’m professionally confused.  different as can be, but if you’re lucky you’ve got someone like mary in your life.  fireworks, jazz hands and all.

always good for a thoughtful conversation...and a brunch

mary encourages me to try all sorts of new things.

mary encourages me to try all sorts of new things.

we've seen each other at our worst and our best.

we’ve seen each other at our worst and our best.

but there's always cause for celebration when mary's around.

see ya later, mar!

see ya later, mar!
