absolute

December 7, 2012

i was an absolute delight during my high school years.  except for the mornings sarah and i would snivel through the entire commute to school.  or when mom and dad wouldn’t let me stay out past curfew.  or when i ate too many french fries doused in ranch dressing, washed down with an under-baked cookie for lunch.  so maybe i wasn’t an absolute delight.  but that really depends on your definition of absolute.

i am charged with 40 17-year-olds to wrangle/nurture/advise/chastise/coddle.  and this, my friends, can be a trying task.  if you’ve ever met a 17-year-old before you’ve probably realized they think they know everything.  they have these little brains in their little heads that work in silly little ways.  last night, as i was locking up my office, i walked out the door to find four senior boys competing to see how many marshmallows they could shovel into their mouths.  this is not atypical of senior boy behavior.  girls are worse.  getting 17-year-olds to do what you want their silly little brains to do is more difficult than unmasking batman.  but this is what i get paid to do {not unmask batman}.

there are days they are complete imbeciles.  we call them “mutants” on those days.  but there are days when their charm and optimism and vibrance could melt even the polar ice caps.  today, one of my students, came into my office.  she’s on her way home to korea for christmas and she had a quick question about her applications for college.  she awkwardly approached my desk, clutching her macbook, and started to bumble about deadlines.  then, she whipped out a humongo candy cane stuck to a thank you card.

dear ms. r,

thank you so much for everything you’ve done for me.

i hope you have a merry christmas and a happy new year!!

sincerely,

h

trickle.  dribble.  bursting flood of frigid water.  that’s the polar ice cap melting…along with my heart.  though they may be mutants, 17-year-olds are also the sweetest, most spirited little characters of them all.  no matter your definition, they are absolute delights.
