putting on the ritz

March 27, 2012

i’ve been lucky enough to stay in more than my fair share of beautiful hotels.  i have stamps in my passport and frequent flier miles in my cache.  but i have never stayed at the ritz in paris…and now i never will.  cue fits of sniffling and snivvling now.

the ritz will close its doors this summer for a 2 year renovation.  gone will be the carpet that coco chanel herself crossed on her way to her permanent residence in the majestic hotel.  gone will be the lavish linens in the suite karl lagerfeld commandeered during paris fashion week.  and even kate moss won’t be able to order a french 75 at the hemingway bar any time soon.  though the objective of the renovation is simply to update the technology embedded within the hotel’s famous walls, and not to change the grandeur of the ritz, i can’t help but think that in any renovation you lose a little of the magic.

good thing miss moss captured the historic haven’s sparkle in this spread for vogue.  and in two years’ time, when the doors reopen, i hope the ritz has saved the sense of the past.  and i hope i’ve saved enough money to afford a stay in the fabulous hotel.  or maybe just a french 75 in the hemingway bar.

even though she had another apartment around the corner in her salon on the rue cambon coco chanel lived at the hotel for nearly 35 years in a 2 bedroom suite.

order kate moss’ favorite tipple, the french 75, which head bartender colin field recreated for her recent wedding.  or try the bloody mary, said to have been created for hemingway in the bar that would later bear his name.  or save your pennies for a little retail therapy in mademoiselle chanel’s signature store just around the corner…

either way, it’s money well spent.
