tgi friggatriskaidekaphobia

January 13, 2012

want to learn something this morning?  good answer.

  • the fear of friday the 13th is also called friggatriskaidekaphobia.  it comes from the word frigga, the name of a norse goddess for whom friday is named + triskaidekaphobia which is the fear of the number 13.
  • there is, according to wikipedia (norse for “brilliant source”), no written evidence for a fear of friday the 13th before the 19th century.  so basically, us crazy youngins made this whole thing up.  fraidy cats!
  • however, there is an old superstition that both friday and the number 13 are unlucky.  remember the canterbury tales?  friday was considered an unlucky day, especially if you’re starting a new project or journey.  so don’t go anywhere or do anything today.  according to christian scripture, friday is unlucky because it was the day jesus was crucified.
  • there is also the superstition that having 13 people seated at a table, as in the last supper, will result in the death of one of the guests.  sounds like an agatha christie novel…or the bible.
  • according to the stress management center nearly 17 to 21 million americans are affected by a fear of friday the 13th.  i’m not one of them.
  • because of this heightened fear it’s estimated that business loses between $800 and $900 million.  so this means i have to go shopping today, right?
  • this year we’ll be scared silly 3 times- january, april and july.
  • my most recent serious relationship began on a friday the 13th.  and ended on martin luther king jr. day.  let’s hope i make it through the weekend!

happy friday the 13th!

I still remember being dumped on Valentine’s Day and look how I turned out…(wait a minute..don’t look) I laugh at superstition, but not real loud. —GO PACKERS….win by at least 8.5 points.–Notorious
